New Layout, New Start?

Been such a long time since my last post (been extremely busy with my dissertation and revising for the exams) that I feel that prehapes now is the time to treat this as a re-start, so to speak, and attempt to get back into the swing of blogging.

Of course Blamerbell's post claiming that young people as "embarassed" to be Labour, well I am not, I am proud to be Labour and I am proud of everything Labour has done for Britain since 1997, never mind 1945. Even under Tony Blair, Britain has become a more progressive and socially just nation, Rhodri Morgan has done an even better job of leading Wales from the decadence of the Tory years.

In Britain, thanks to Tony Blair, we have the minimum wage, devolution, 4 weeks paid holidays, child benifit has increased, pensioners are better off (despite some of them complaining otherwise, although I will hold my tongue on them, for now...), cut crime and unemployment, ban on the cruel....activity of Fox Hunting, 26 weeks paid maternity and 2 weeks paid parently leave, free entry to muesums and art galleries, since 1997 Labour has lifted over 2.1 million children out of absolute poverty, we have repealed homophobic laws brought in by the Tories and have legalised homosexual civil partnerships, lead the way to tackling third world poverty and not forgetting peace in Northern Ireland, which could well be the greatest achieve of this Labour government.

In Wales, Welsh Labour has introduced Free Prescriptions, Free school breakfasts, free entry to swimming pools during school holidays for school children, free bus passes for pensioners, smoking ban in public places, more people are now in work then in 1999, Welsh Labour in the 2007 Assembly elections were the only party to say that all of their policies will be measured by now they tackle Child Poverty.

Britain is in a far better shape then it was in 1997, it is more fairer and more socially just then it has was during the 18 years of Tory misery, Labour supporters have a lot to be proud of, the achieves of the Labour government since 1997 have been good, no-where near bold enough and no where near radical enough, but never the less it is still a lot better then what we would have if the Tories were still in power, we now have schools which have new and decide equiptment, new buildings and buildings in that were in dire need of repair during the Tory years are now repaired, we have more people from poorer backgrounds going to university, or less discrimination against homosexuals in the law and education, these are things which not only Labour members, supports and voters should be proud of, but every decent person in Britain should be.

I for one am proud to be Labour and proud of the progress made by Labour since 1997, maybe it could have been more socialist, but it has still be progressive and has still made millions of lives in Britain, and in the third world, much better off then they would have been since Labour has been in power, we have made Britain into a stronger nation, a nation that now has more social justice and equality then it had since 1979. If some jumped up middle class students can't see past their own pockets and Iraq, then that is there own problem, as a working class student, a socialist and a proud card carrying member of Labour, I am no-where near embarassed to be Labour and, to paraphrase Tony Blair, be it Old Labour or New Labour, it is better then a Tory Government.

Individual and regional wealth inequalities have gone through the roof under Labour. Is this the sort of legacy you call socialist?

Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have adopted the worst elements of Thatcherism.

Isn't it sad that the two principled challengers (Meacher and McDonnell) to Brown are seen as some lunatic fringe elements when they represent traditional labour movement values.

If you think things will be different under Brown, forget it. He'll be basing his programme on wooing middle England and neglecting those communities such as ours that built the Labour party.

Firstly, I do not believe New "Labour" are all that socialist, and definitly not socialist enough for me, however I do not believe that we should ignore the achievements of New "Labour" and the positive and negitive differences that New "Labour" has made to Britain, and I am proud of the positive changes.

As for the leadership elections, I am going to vote for McDonnell, if he does get onto the ballot, and I also plan to vote Cruddas for deputy. We need a a new direction in Labour, and we must keep and win back our traditional voters, something New "Labour" has been neglecting too much since 1997.

I admire your position - although I think its impossible to turn things around within Labour. I come from a trade union family, my father wouldn't spit on the Labour party of today if it was on fire. He can't believe how a Labour government could ever implement such right wing policies.

The problem for you is that under Brown things will get worse - he's already talking about a programme of government for middle england.

Labour don't care about their traditinal areas cause their strategists know full well that they have to win traditional Tory seats to win in a first past the post UK wide election. Hence Blair's famous words 'We were elected as New Labour : We will govern as New Labour'. Don't expect anything different under Brown. how sad it is though to see a party build on such fine ideals abandon everything in a lust for power.

i note with interest that you favourite book is 1984. New Labour have done more to bring in the orwellian nightmare than any other government in history. The proposals for ID cards are just the surface of a surveilance state like no other in the western world.

I am young and idealistic, maybe too idealistic thinking that Labour can be saved. However, sooner or later Labour will need to worry about their traditional areas, I think the 2007 Welsh Assembly election does demostrate that traditional supports of Labour are turning to Plaid, the Lib Dems, or more worrying, a small few to the BNP. It is only a matter of time before Labour has to take account of it's core support, or risk collasping. Since without it's core support the party will struggle to survive.

Oh and I do agree about ID cards, total waste of money which has no benifit in cutting crime or stopping terrorism.

"I am proud of everything Labour has done for Britain since 1997"

What a blinkered view. Even Tony Blair isn't proud of that! Are you seriously proud of the cash for peerages scandal, the illegal war in Iraq, the increasing divide between rich and poor?

"thanks to Tony Blair we have...devolution, 4 weeks paid holidays"

We have fewer bank holidays than most of continental Europe and don’t even have our own national ST David's day as a bank holiday. Tony Blair responsible for devolution??? I think it is fairly well documented that Tony Blair has been anything but enthusiastic about the process. Yes it happened under Blair but that is because it was a process he could not stop. If anything because of Blair we have been left with an Assembly and not a Parliament.

"Welsh Labour in the 2007 Assembly elections were the only party to say that all of their policies will be measured by now they tackle Child Poverty.”

Labour in Wales failed to reach its own targets for tackling child poverty?

Sorry to nit pick but the post is a bit ridiculous and blinkered!

Now here's one for you Geraint. A friend of mine works in a care home, one night 10-8 and three evenings 4-10. That makes 28 hours a week on the minimum wage. Guess what, due to Gordies latest budget her income tax bill is going to double to over £10 plus NI of course. Thing is if you work less than 30 hours a week you can't claim working tax credits. I guess she could up her hours, but then one of the other girls would have to lose theirs.

There's a million people eligible for working tax credit who don't claim it because they don't want to go onto benefits. Gordie knows that his budget will double the tax bill for these people. Guess what, if they all claimed he'd have to raise taxes to cover it. So he knows he's doubling the tax bill for the working poor.

Gordie should let the working poor keep their hard-earned wages. but no he wants to control people through the benefits system. Socialists are like that aren't they, afraid to let people have a bit of freedom.

By the way I see your supporting Mcdonnell in the leadership race, does this mean you support his cheerleading for the IRA?

Brown or McDonnell? I would choose McDonnell myself, plus the IRA is a non-issue, I would much rather see disarming of the Unionist terrorist forces and the same treatment to the Unionist terrorists.

Che Grav-ara, points taken.
However Labour MEPs did support 4 weeks paid holidays, and devolution was supported by Labour, and it could have easily been ignored, since they could claim that people rejected devolution in 1979, which is what the current powers of the Assembly is based on the 1979 proposal.

As for child poverty, might be missing the targets, but at least they are there and at least progress is being made, not enough, no-where near enough, but hopefully that will change.

However I was mainly trying to defend the "indefencable"

I would have thought McDonnell's pro-IRA views were pretty relevant.

Would you vote for someone who said this about the Loyalist paramilitaries "It's about time we started honouring those people involved in the armed struggle."...mmh thought not.

Yet you're happy to support someone who said that about the IRA.

Actually, I would vote for someone like that who said the same thing about unionist terrorists, as long as I agreed with thier policies and thought that voting for them would send a clear message to the party, or got them elected as leader.

Devolution in Nothern Ireland has seen Sien Finn and the DUP working together, this could hopefully be the start of Northern Ireland heading into a future that is not sectarian, and that is why I think it is now a non-issue.

Also it will be extremely hard for McDonnell to win the leadership challenge, great if he did, but a least by voting for McDonnell it will help send out a message to the New "Labour" camp, particularly if their are a good % of votes for McDonnell.

Geraint - you've got to make up your mind whether your a democrat or a fascist. Thank God the vast majority in the Parliamentary Labour Party had the decency to reject this creep.
